Academic Protocols

1. What is being done to prepare and maintain safe classrooms for the Fall 2020 semester?

Classrooms will follow the general safety protocols of the Urshan campus. Therefore, in the classroom, social distancing and masking guidelines should be observed. We plan to facilitate this by maximizing space between tables, chairs, and lecterns. We may use plexiglass shielding if needed.

After every class session, professors will be required to sanitize the high-touch surfaces using a spray disinfectant. Therefore, classroom spaces will be sanitized throughout the day (in addition to the already-established cleaning schedule for the building). This means that students will need to vacate classrooms immediately following a class session so this sanitization can take place.

2. Has the Fall 2020 schedule changed to accommodate COVID-19 protocols?

Yes. Since the UPCI General Conference has changed to a virtual format in 2020, we have decided to cancel General Conference Break and proceed with our regularly-scheduled classes. Additionally, we decided to combine the Finals Period with the last week of classes. Students will not be required to return to campus after they leave for Thanksgiving Break. The new semester schedule will run from Monday, August 17 through Friday, December 4, with that final week (Monday, November 30 – Friday, December 4) being an online week.

(If professors plan to attend the General Conference business session on Wednesday, September 23, that day might become an “online day” for any affected courses.)

3. Have any of my class times and locations changed to accommodate COVID-19 protocols?

No. But every on-campus course will have a Distance Learning section to allow us to follow the two-week quarantine protocol when necessary. Any student or faculty member who has been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or is symptomatic cannot be physically in class/on campus until they have received a negative COVID-19 test result. Every faculty member will record every course lecture/session and upload the link to the Canvas course. In this way, students under COVID-related quarantine will have the option to continue participating in their on-campus courses.

4. If I am sick or showing COVID-19 symptoms, am I required to miss class?

Students and faculty will not be allowed to come to class if they are ill, are presenting with COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing), have been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19, or have tested positive for COVID-19. They will be required to attend the course virtually until they have received a negative COVID-19 test result.

5. Will I be penalized for an absence related to COVID-19?

Students who are quarantined due to exposure/sickness will receive excused absences for the duration, since these absences are mandated by the institution.

6. Will I still have access to one-on-one meetings with my professors, advisors, and USSC staff?

Professors, advisors, and USSC staff are encouraged to set up virtual meetings with students when possible. If both parties are comfortable and would prefer an in-person meeting, they may schedule one according to the Urshan employee’s discretion. In-person meetings are subject to the general safety protocols.
